Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the 2025 amfAR Gala in Cannes on Thursday, May 22, the actor and musician, 36, opened up about his motherDiana Ross' dress and 18-foot shawl, which featured her children and grandchildren's names. "Ugo Mozie designed it, but me and mom came up with an idea with him to create something. Ugo Mozie is amazing," he says. "He's a Nigerian designer who I'm very close with, and it was a collaboration." Evan, who is a Remy Martin partner, continues to PEOPLE, "The biggest thing for my mom is her children and grandchildren. I mean, my mom has had such a wonderful, amazing career, but what she cares about the most is her grandchildren and children." "And so if we could do something that felt like that, I mean, anything that she has, her archive of clothing is so incredible, so anything she could wear is going to be beautiful," Evan says. "But I was happy to be her date. It was nice. It was nice." In an interview withVoguered carpet livestream hostLa La Anthony, Diana, who last appeared at the Met Gala in 2003, revealed that she almost didn't make it to this year's event. "Well, there was not a plan. Everything was really, really at last moment. My son persuaded me, 'causeI'm actually on tour," she said. The music legend also shared an insight into her sentimental look. "If you ever had pictures of the inside of the train, it has the names of all my children, and my eight grandchildren. Everybody's name is embroidered in that," Diana, adding of her headwear, "I had to be careful with the hat because my head was pretty big." "She is the met ball," son Evan added.
